New York State Pesticide Monitoring -

Sampling Networks and Data

In the first year of monitoring (water year - 1997) the New York State Monitoring Program focused on two networks:

Synoptic Network: A statewide synoptic sampling of surface water at 64 sites in June and July of 1997. The network was designed to identify the presence and distribution of pesticides across New York. The timing of sample collection was designed to coincide with the period during and immediately following when pesticides are commonly applied in New York State. Sites were selected to address relations between major land uses across the State and the concentrations of pesticides in streams draining these areas.

Fixed Site Network: Six sites established in 1997 to develop long-term information to identify sources, trends, and fates of pesticides in surface waters. At least monthly samples have been collected at these sites since April 1997. This network is composed of three pairs of watersheds, each pair includes a stream draining a watershed dominated by a particular land use "nested" within a much larger watershed which integrates conditions from a wide range of land uses. These sites were also included as part of the Synoptic Network to help assess how representative these sites are compared with other sites on streams draining similar land uses.
