This interactive mapper was developed as part of a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Geological Survey and the New York State Department of State Office of Planning, Development, and Community Infrastructure to support the South Shore Estuary Reserve Coordinated Water Resources Monitoring Strategy ( https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20171161 ). The mapper aggregates available study information from government agencies, academic institutions, stakeholders, and citizen scientists and provides links (or contact information) for users to obtain available data in the South Shore Estuary Reserve, which is administered by the New York State Department of State and other State and local entities--more information on the Reserve can be found at on the New York State website ( https://www.dos.ny.gov/opd/sser/ ). Information on this mapper is provided in the context of an organization’s monitoring network and the associated water-quality constituents or ecological data collected. Each of the features can be queried to obtain more information about the site, and all information can be exported (downloaded). The information provided can be filtered on the basis of water-quality constituent being collected or analyzed at the site, the data-collection organization, whether data are publicly available or not, and other search parameters. Other features include the watershed boundaries using 12-digit hydrologic unit codes (HUC12), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration bathymetry layer of most bays of the Reserve, a list of New York State Department of Environmental Conservation impaired waters, and shellfish areas. The information presented in this mapper, along with its corresponding metadata and geospatial data, can be found at https://doi.org/10.5066/F7JQ0Z46 .
- FILTERS allows users to refine the displayed monitoring sites by organization, site type, sample type, constituent, status of the monitoring program, whether the data are publicly available, and waterbody.
- EXPORT allows users to download the site locations and accompanying information that displays in the pop-up tables in the following formats: GeoJSON, KML, and CSV. Only information about sites displayed on the map at the time of export, which can be controlled through the FILTERS function, are downloaded. Only information in the following categories of the MAP LAYERS function are available for download: SURFACE WATER MONITORING SITES, SEDIMENT MONITORING SITES, GROUNDWATER MONITORING SITES, BIOLOGICAL MONITORING SITES, and GAPS IN MONITORING SITES. All other layers are available through online through the respective agencies websites.
- MAP LAYERS allows users to toggle which layers are displayed, including the locations of surface water, groundwater, sediment, and biological monitoring, which was compiled for the CWRMS. Ancillary layers are provided for context and have been provided by or downloaded from the respective agencies indicated in the explanation. In the case no organization is identified, site information was compiled from more than one organization and presented for reference.
- BASEMAPS allows users to change the map over which the layers are displayed.
